What are arrival and dismissal times?

See BCS's HISD website for the latest information. Arrival and dismissal times have changed for 2024-25.

How do I drop off and pick up my children?

See BCS's HISD website for the latest information.

Children are dropped off and picked up using the school carpool lanes. Staff are on hand to assist your child as they exit your vehicle and to help them locate their classrooms. Information will be shared on Bloomz about carpool lane location/s, traffic flow, and options for walking your child to school. Expect wait times of up to one hour or more, at both dropoff and pickup for the first week of school. BCS staff work hard to minimize wait times, but it is a steep learning curve for families at the start of the year.

How will I find my student at dismissal time?

At Meet the Teacher night, parents will receive a dashboard card to display at carpool dismissal for your student. Teachers and staff will be on duty in the parking lot to communicate via walkie talkie with staff inside the building to send your student outside when they read your dashboard card. Watch Bloomz in the days leading up to school for campus traffic maps and more information to assist in this process.

What is the school dress code?

The dress code is available on BCS's HISD website. Children should wear closed-toed shoes due to recess and physical activity. Uniforms are not required.

Do parents/guardians buy classroom supplies?

Parents provide the school with supplies through contributions to the PTO's Bronco Fund in August and September. More information about the Bronco Fund will come in the weeks before school begins. Teachers are able to buy classroom supplies that suits their needs, and the PTO reimburses them up to a fixed amount. If additional support is requested by the school from parents, that need will be communicated on Bloomz. Usually, middle school students receive a short shopping list of personal supplies such as an academic planner, wired ear buds, etc. For all grade levels, families should provide a backpack and reusable water bottle for their student with the student's name on them and a lunchbox with the student's name on it for those who bring a packed lunch.

What are the PTO's primary fundraisers?

There are several fundraisers carried out during the year:

The Bronco Fund - Provides funding for annual and recurring International Baccalaureate (IB) fees, IB training for staff, IB technology, school supplies, and field trips. More information will be provided about this fundraiser closer to the start of the school year.

Spirit Wear Sales - This year we are partnering with BennyBoySpirit.com for Bronco apparel sales.

The Fall Fundraiser - This year we are selling popcorn online and there is an option to buy out.

The Fall Festival - One of our largest Fundraisers and the biggest community event.

The Spring Fundraiser - The annual BCS Boosterthon Fun Run! There is an option to buy out, but all students participate in the event and are asked to register free of charge. More details to come.

Scholastic Book Fair - Encourages a love of reading in our students while earning rewards for our school.

How will I receive communication from the school?

The school will communicate using the Bloomz app, the school website, and School Messenger. Principal Hernandez has scheduled several parent coffee mornings, called Principal Cafe, throughout the year. You can also follow BCS on Twitter (@briarmeadowK_8).

How will I receive communication from the PTO?

The PTO will utilize Bloomz, the PTO website where all upcoming events and fundraising information can be found, our Facebook page, and sometimes direct emails from our PTO and treasurer Google accounts. We ask all parents, guardians, and staff to register with the PTO website. Once registered you will be able to participate in fundraising, stay up to date on school life events, subscribe to our calendar, receive our bi-weekly PTO newsletter, and request reimbursement for approved school-related spending.

Where can I find a calendar of upcoming school events?

The calendar tab on Bloomz shows upcoming BCS school events. You can also subscribe to the joint PTO and school Google calendar by clicking subscribe here. Both are updated regularly by PTO volunteers. The HISD academic calendar is here. BCS's HISD school calendar is on the school's website at https://www.houstonisd.org/Page/44933, but is dependent on school staff updating it; we recommend you use the Bloomz or joint Google calendar instead.

How do I volunteer my time with the school?

To volunteer, chaperone a field trip, or help at an event, you must register every year with VIPS (Volunteer in Public Schools). This must be done at the start of every school year. Volunteer opportunities will be posted on Bloomz, the PTO website, and the PTO newsletter. You can also talk with your child’s teacher about volunteer opportunities in the classroom

How do I communicate with my student’s classroom teacher? Will I meet the classroom teacher before the start of school?

Teachers use the Bloomz app or their work email for communicating with parents. This app has direct messaging capabilities. Teachers may also provide alternate methods of communication at Meet the Teacher. Details about Meet the Teacher will be shared on Bloomz.

Where can I find my student’s daily schedule?

Classroom teachers provide daily schedules.

When will I receive the back-to-school parent packet?

The packet will be sent home during the first week of school. Please fill it out as soon as possible and send it back to school.

What is the IB program and where can I find more info?

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) - International Baccalaureate® is a student-centered approach to education that develops young students as active participants in a lifelong journey of learning. This program aligns with BCS’s call to be a constructivist school embedded in inquiry. For more information about IB at BCS please use this link https://www.houstonisd.org/Page/135946.

Are school lunches and breakfasts available?

School breakfast and lunches are provided. Breakfast can be picked up at the entrance in the morning and eaten in the classroom. Students can also bring a packed lunch to school. More information regarding school lunches can be found at Nutrition Services / Home

Are there after-school enrichment activities and on-site after-school care?

Yes! Details and registration information for on-site after-school care and enrichment activities will be provided in August. Registration for all enrichment activities will be through the vendors. Check Bloomz for announcements.

I feel overwhelmed by new information. What are the main things I need to get done at the start of the school year?
